Description

First published in the United States in a limited edition, this bilingual volume of Breton's verse has since enjoyed a considerable—and deserved—reputation. All of the author's well-known qualities of evocation are present in this collection, which contains poems written over many years. One of the more famous works included in "Freedom of Love"—an unmistakably sensual description of Breton's wife. The poems reveal the manner in which the poet-critic views the world in all it upheavals, those occuring in the private depths of the individual as well as those harassing man as a social being. Andre Breton's testimony is to be accepted as a token of the classic tradition of the surrealists, imaginatively uncompromising and morally steadfast.
