Though born and raised in far-off New Hampshire Harry Burns Hutchins was a graduate of the University of Michigan and spent most of his life in the University's service, as teacher of history and rhetoric, professor of law, dean of the Law School, twice acting president, and finally president, succeeding Dr. James Burrill Angell in 1910. He was an eye-witness to the development of his Alma Mater from a small, though promising, midwestern establishment to somewhat of the stature and complexity which it has attaining in modern times, and gave it his leadership duing the decade of World War I. Mr. Smith's book is a biography both of Dr. Hutchins and of the institution to which he was so deeply attached.
