The necessity of a thorough study of whip snakes and racers emerged when the classifications allowed widely different forms like the blue racer and the coachwhip snake to be placed in the same genus, and the same subspecific names to be applied to distinct forms in Florida and Texas. The taxonomy of the genus Coluber was recognized as unsatisfactory, primarily due to the limited number of specimens in collections and the lack of a comprehensive study by a single researcher. Preliminary studies indicated two distinct groups within the genus, suggesting they might deserve separate genera status. A detailed analysis of the structure, pattern, and particularly the reproductive organs of each specimen was conducted, utilizing an improved injection method to study the penes. The study underscored the importance of comprehensive specimen collection and collaboration across numerous institutions to achieve conclusive results.
