Population and environment are topics of intense current discussion and international action. Population growth rates have given rise to the metaphor of an exploding bomb, and accounts of oil spills, droughts, and rainforest destruction appear daily in the news. Despite the crowded agenda, observes Gayl Ness, the relationships between population and the environment still defy clear and comprehensive understanding. While they are closely intertwined in real life, they are separate in much of our thought and action. The contributors to this volume explore the basis of this separation and offer ways to integrate these closely interconnected areas, providing a forum for dialogue between those who support the interests of each.
