Figurines from Seleucia on the Tigris catalogues the figurines found at Seleucia during the excavations directed by Professor Leroy Waterman that were onducted by the University of Michigan, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art between 1927-1932. The majority of the figurines are now housed at the Museum of Classical Archaeology at the University of Michigan, with others at the Cleveland and Toledo Museums of Art and the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. This volume, prepared under the Institute of Archaeological Research of the University of Michigan, includes detailed descriptions and photographs of the figurines which had not been previously published. The primary aim of the volume is to catalogue and describe the various types of figurines, their techniques, and provenience, and to make connections with similar types from other sites. The Introduction provides a summary of the essential facts regarding the technique, types, chronology, and interpretation of the figurines, with many statements considered tentative due to the incomplete excavation of the site. The volume, supported by the Board of Governors of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, highlights both the findings and the necessary incompleteness of archaeological endeavors.
