In the summer of 1936, the Michigan State Highway Department, in cooperation with the Portland Cement Association, embarked on an experimental project to stabilize a section of the Shore Line Highway near Cheboygan using soil-cement methods. Despite challenging weather conditions that significantly disrupted work, the project focused on designing and controlling soil-cement mixtures. They began with preliminary soil surveys and classifications to identify sand and clay types, then laboratory tests determined optimal proportions of soil, cement, and water for compaction and stability. Field control involved meticulous moisture content measurements and volume assessments of scarified soil, with compaction tests ensuring mixture quality. The project’s findings highlighted the importance of void characteristics and the cement-voids ratio in achieving durable stabilization. While further research is recommended to refine these methods and pave the way for more efficient construction practices, this book outlines the project's methods, findings, and recommendations for future soil-cement stabilization endeavors.
