Inspirational U-M Press author, wonderful companion, endlessly curious about the world around him, John Swales passed away last week. A comprehensive obituary has been published by the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, but even this is too short to describe a larger-than-life personality whose books with U-M Press range from the best-selling Academic Writing for Graduate Students (written with the amazing Christine Feak, and edited by dedicated and creative Kelly Sippell) to John's memoir Incidents in an Educational Life to The Birds of Washtenaw County, Michigan, which provides endless joy to those of us in Ann Arbor. I will miss enjoying delicious biscuits (not cookies) in John's cozy home personally and am eternally grateful for his professional and personal kindnesses.
