Robben W. Fleming was an influential American lawyer, professor, and academic administrator known for his exceptional leadership during turbulent times in higher education. He served as the President of the University of Michigan from 1968 to 1979 and again as interim president in 1988. Before his tenure at Michigan, he was the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1964 to 1967, where he navigated significant campus unrest, even personally posting bail for students arrested during a protest. His earlier career included serving as a labor negotiator and as a lawyer in the U.S. Army during World War II. Beyond academia, Fleming also served as president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
