UM Press Annotates Disability Studies: Academic Ableism

Welcome to our second month of UM Press Annotates. For the next four weeks, we invite readers to join us in annotating some of our open access ebooks around the theme of disability studies.

We're kicking off our disability studies exploration with Jay Timothy Dolmage's Academic Ableism: Disability and Higher Education (University of Michigan Press, 2017). Academic Ableism asks us to center disability in the ways we think about higher education. Learn more about Academic Ableism in part 1 and part 2 of our interview with Dolmage .

This week, UM Press invites readers to annotate Ch. 2, "The Retrofit." In this chapter, Dolmage examines the temporary fixes–from physical curb cuts to accommodation letters–that mark higher education's reactions to diversity. He challenges us to reimagine spaces in education designed for diversity from the start.

Please join us in annotating "The Retrofit" from Jay Timothy Dolmage's Academic Ableism from February 20 th through February 26 th .

How to Participate

The University of Michigan Press looks forward to engaging with readers through UM Press Annotates. To help make the conversation productive for all, we ask annotators to follow these community guidelines:

  • Seek to understand differing perspectives. Questions can inspire meaningful conversation and help us develop shared understandings, even where we may disagree.
  • We welcome scholarly disagreements, but ask all annotators to engage in respectful communication practices.
  • Help make the conversation searchable across social media with the hashtags #UMPAnnotates and #DisabilityStudies.

To add annotations and respond to others, sign up for a free Hypothesis account .
