Vernor's 150th Anniversary
Vernor’s Ginger Ale celebrates its 150th anniversary this week. Created in 1866 by James Vernor, Vernor’s was first introduced in a drugstore in Detroit. The Michigan made ginger ale spread from city to city through the sale of bottling franchises, but was not distributed nationally until the 1960s. Vernor's is the oldest continuously produced soda pop in the United States, preceding Coke, Pepsi, Hires, and Faygo.
On June 11, the Vernor’s Ginger Ale Collector’s Club will be hosting a 150th Anniversary Party at the Detroit Historical Museum. The event will feature a presentation on the history of the soda pop, a world record attempt, and Vernor's floats, cream ales and Boston Coolers.
