"Rocker/Academic" John Covach talks to The Chronicle of Higher Education about popular music scholarship
John Covach, "Academic by day and rock musician by night" - and co-editor of Sounding Out Pop: Analytical Essays in Popular Music - recently discussed the new Institute for Popular Music at the University of Rochester (a "way to do the rock thing in the academic context," as he put it) with The Chronicle of Higher Education.
In the article, Covach, who is the director of the Institute, expressed the importance of popular music scholarship, stating "Talking about the Beatles or Elvis or Springsteen should be no different than talking about Beethoven or Bach." To that end, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, "The new institute, believed to be the first year-round American college program of its kind, will offer courses, lectures, and workshops on scholarly analyses of popular music, along with performances as a means to increase understanding of the field."
