Hanes Walton Jr., U-M professor and co-author of 'Presidential Elections,' passes away at 72
Hanes Walton, Jr. , a University of Michigan political science professor and co-author of the landmark Presidential Elections, 1789-2008, passed away Monday at the age of 72. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Walton came to U-M in 1992 after teaching at Savannah State College and Atlanta University. His research focused on African-American politics, and in addition to his book with the Press Walton published several other notable books, including Invisible Politics: Black Political Behavior, American Political Parties, The Political Philosophy of Martin Luther King. Jr. , When the Marching Stopped: The Politics of Civil Rights Regulatory Agencies, and the two-volume The African American Electorate: A Statistical History.
Michael Brintnall, executive director of the American Political Science Association, praised Walton's "great joy and dedication" in mentoring students. "He has left political science a much better place, and he will be sorely missed."
