New author video! Joshua S. Duchan discusses the musical and social world of collegiate a cappella

Collegiate a cappella, which dates back on American college campuses to at least the colonial era, has exploded in popularity over the past few decades and is now expanding its reach internationally. Yet until the arrival of Joshua S. Duchan’s Powerful Voices: The Musical and Social World of Collegiate A Cappella, this uniquely American musical form had never been the subject of scholarly examination.

Recently, Duchan stopped by the University of Michigan Press studio to answer some questions about his book. In this new video, Duchan talks about what makes collegiate a cappella an interesting subject for study, why it is important to American music history, why it really took off in the 1980s and 1990s, the role of technology in collegiate a cappella, and more.
