Jonathan Kalb's 'Great Lengths' wins George Freedley Memorial Award

The University of Michigan Press congratulates Jonathan Kalb, whose 2011 book Great Lengths: Seven Works of Marathon Theater has been awarded the Theatre Library Association's George Freedley Memorial Award. The award, named for the New York Public Library’s Theatre Collection's original curator and the TLA's first president, is awarded annually to the best English-language book on live theatre. Professor Kalb's prize marks the first time a University of Michigan Press title has received the Freedley Award.

Great Lengths examines several dramatic works that are extraordinarily ambitious in scope, including Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Robert Wilson's Einstein on the Beach, and more, some of which having running times exceeding five hours. Kalb explores the diverse forms and effects of each play under review, while also attempting to recreate the dramatic experience for readers.
