UMP Author Dave Dempsey Petitions to Name State Forest in Honor of Gov. Milliken
Michigan's forest giants include the majestic white pine, which fueled Michigan's initial boom and bust economy of the 1800s. But the biographer of Michigan's longest-serving governor wants to honor another forest giant still standing tall -- the conservation partnership of William and Helen Milliken.
The author of William G. Milliken, Michigan's Passionate Moderate has launched an on-line petition to persuade Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the state legislature to name a state forest or natural area after the Millikens, who championed the state's emergence as an environmental leader in the 1970s and early 1980s. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/millikens The goal, says author Dave Dempsey, is to collect 1,000 on-line signatures.
In answer to those who oppose naming a state-owned natural resource after people, Dempsey points out there are Michigan state parks and other sites honor conservationists or statespeople, including P. J. Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon, Albert Sleeper State Park in the Thumb of Michigan, and Warren Dunes State Park near Bridgman. "It's entirely appropriate and natural to name a vital natural resource after the Millikens," said Dempsey. "They did so much to pass on an improved natural heritage to all future generations who live in or love Michigan."
